  • With Image Info Toolkit you will have the ability to set up and tend your own hierarchical keyword catalog (also called Thesaurus) as deep in hierarchy as you like in 4 different languages.
  • You can imagine this genealogic keyword system like the tree structure of your folder hierarchy on the hard drive of your computer.
  • Genealogic means that every keyword in the catalog 'knows' about it's higher level. This indicates that for example the keyword " Germany " 'knows' it is a sub catagory of countries and countries 'knows' it is this time a sub category of "Europe" and so on.. This short example shows very well that it will be of advantage to make a well thought out concept befor creating your own hierarchical catalog. But don't worry, it will be no problem to change it again.
    How to use the keyword catalog for fast and comfortable keywording of your images, you can find out at "Edit image information " -> "Add new keywords".
    To set up and tend your keyword catalog please choose "Keywords" > "Keyword catalog"
    The following window will open on your desktop:



  • On the left side listing 1 you see the keywords of the highest level. A small arrow beside a keyword points out that there are lower levels which refer to it. Double clicking on the keyword with an arrow next to it, will open the next lower level refering to this keyword. Single click will activate the keyword and show you it's accompanying list 2 of synonyms.
    You may return to the highest hierarchy level every time using the 8 button.

    1. Insert new keywords and synonyms
    Insert the new keyword in field 4 of the appropriate hierarchical level and press the return key. If the desired keyword is published in other levels of the catalog already, a dialog window will inform you about the levels and sublevels the keyword is already connected with. (s.a.search keyword). If you agree to the multiple entry of the keyword, press the OK button in the dialog window. The new keyword will be shown on it's level and with the listing of synonyms. If you don't agree to the multiple entry, just cancel the process.
    Enter new synonyms to the active keyword in field 5 . All synonyms will be listed at 2 .

    2. Delete a keyword
    Drag the keyword you wish to delete on the little trash icon 7 with your mouse key hold down. A dialog will inform you about all possible keywords connceted to the selected one, which will be deleted too. Click the OK button to precede the action or choose abort.

    3. Rename a keyword
    Hold the [ctrl] key (Mac [comand]) pressed while double clicking the keyword you want to rename or change. In the following dialog window you will be able to rename the selected keyword. If this new spelling already has an entry in the catalog you will get a warning message. (s.a. search keyword).

    4. Translate a keyword
    Image Info Toolkit makes a distinction between your default language and the foreign languages. Only in your default language you are able to add new keywords to the catalogue. When you add a new keyword in your default language there will be placed the word 'dummy' as a stand-in automatically in every foreign language, until you translate it. You can translate a keyword by choosing the wished language from the combo-box 9. As soon as you work in a foreign language, field 3 will become editable and the keyword in the default language is displayed above field 3 . Mark the content of field 3 and type in your translation in the chosen language.

    5. Assign a keyword to a different hierarchical level
    Drag the keyword, you want to displace from one level to another, with your mouse key pressed on the targeted level. There must be a keyword selected on the higher level to make a connection with. If the new positioning of the keyword you selected would cause a self reference you will get an error message and the transaction will be aborted automatically

    6. Search a keyword
    To search a keyword, simply type it into field 6 and press the return key. If there are mulitple entries in the keyword catalog regarding your desired keyword, the progam will display a window similar to this one displayed below, to inform you about every single hierarchical branch where the keyword is already registered in the catalog.

    Listing A shows you all places where the keyword has been found in the catalog. Selecting one entry with a single mouse click on it will display the complete hierarchical path B of the chosen keyword.
    Words in square brackets will show you that these words have been found in the synonym section. In this case you can find the appropriate keyword in front of it. Choose the keyword you need by double clicking the selection A or use the OK button at right bottom of the dialog window.
    Pressing the cancel button will bring you back to an unmodified keyword catalog window.

    7. Set up more then three levels in the hierarchical catalog
    Select the appropriate keyword in the right most hierarchical level, to which you would like your new keyowrd to be connceted, using the small right arrow button 12 at the bottom of the window will display a new empty hierarchical level of the keyword catalog where you can insert your new keyword.

    8. Jump back from a hierarchical level higher than three
    Button 11 will be always displayed, if at least the highest hierarchical level is invisible. The scroll bar beside 11 gives you an idea, how far you are from the highest hierarchy level. Clicking the 11 button will bring you one level backwards.

    9. Export keyword catalog
    This function is not available in the demo mode version.
    Image Info Toolkit allows you to export parts of or your complete keyword catalog. This is usefull for your personal back up or to exchange keyword catalog or parts of it with other users of Image Info Toolkit. The exported data can only be imported into another Image Info Tookit application. Other applications are not supported.
    a. To export your complete keyword catalog select the menu "keywords > "export...". In the following dialog box you will be asked to choose a name for your exported data file. Click on "save" will start the export process.
    b. To export just a part of your keyword catalog, drag a single keyword onto the floppy disk symbole 10.The choosen keyword itself and all keywords related to it, which are on a lower hierarchy level, will be exported as one single branch of your hierarchical catalog. A dialog will ask you to choose a name for your exported data file.

    10. Import keyword catalog
    You can import a keyword datafile by choosing the menu "Keywords" > "Import..." . A dialog window like this will open:

    A single mouse click on button 20 will open a dialog box, were you can choose the file you would like to import into your keyword catalog. Image Info Toolkit allows you to import two different kinds of catalog files:
    1. The original Image Info Toolkit catalog file exported in the native Image Info Toolkit file format, identifyable by the suffix ".ekw" on Windows and Mac
    2. Tab and return delimited catalog files in plain text format (ASCII). Those text files can only be imported if you checked the option box 24 first. Some other programs for example 'iView Media Pro' are able to create such files. The text files must have the following structure :
    keyword[return]
    [tab]subkeyword[return]
    [tab][tab]subkeyword[return]
    [tab][tab][tab]subsubkeyword[return]
    [tab]subkeyword[return] etc.

    If you have got an existing keyword catalog, there will be more options available (see window above)
    a. Click on button 21 will export the actual data from your existing keyword catalog into a back-up document, which will be stored seperatley on your hard drive. This routine will allow you to return to older versions of your keyword catalog everytime if nessesary. We strongly recommend to choose this back-up option first, especially when you want to import a text file catalog. These function is not available when you run the program in demo mode
    b. A "standard import" will add all imported keywords to your already existing data in the keyword catalog. Checking the option 22 "Overwrite existing catalog" will delete the existing data in your catalog and replace it by the newly imported keywords.
    A single mouse click on the check button 23 will start the import process. If you try to import a hugh datafile, this process will need a few minutes. Please be a little patient in this case.

    11. Changing the number of displayed hierarchie levels

    You can choose to display your keyword catalog with 3, 4 or 5 hierarchical levels visible. To change the number of hierarchical keyword levels displayed simultaneous, please choose 'file-> preferences" and "keyword catalog" from the window which opens. Check the number of keyword levels you want to be displayed simultaneous from the right check boxes.

    12. Changing the language name
    A click on button 13 will start a dialog, that let you change the name of the language.

    13. Add further keyword catalogs
    Image Info Toolkit II can handle as much keyword catalogs as you like. Each of them can be handled within up to 4 languages. This can be useful for those professional photographer who deliver their images to different image portals and agents who have got different guidelines for keywording structure. To install a new catalog choose from the menu 'keywords' the menu 'new catalog... ' Enter a name for the catalog in the dialog box and click ok. The new catalog has got an entry under the menu 'Keywords' and can be selected there.

    14. Switch between several keyword catalogs
    Every keyword catalog has an entry in the menu 'Keywords'. Choose the desired catalog from the keyword menu.

    15. Change the name of a catalog
    Choose the catalog you want to rename from the menu 'Keywords'. After that choose 'Catalog name...' from the menu 'Keywords' and enter the new name for the catalog in the opening dialog box.
